DHCP - (Dynamic Host Configuration
Protocol)
DHCP is a protocol by which a machine can obtain an IP number from
a server on the local network.
DNS - (Domain Name System)
The Domain Name System is the system that translates Internet domain
names into IP numbers. A "DNS Server" is a server that
performs this kind of translation.
Host
Any computer on a network that is a repository for services available
to other computers on the network is known as a host.
IP Number - (Internet Protocol Number)
A unique number consisting of 4 parts separated by dots, e.g. 192.168.1.1
- Every machine that is on the Internet has a unique IP number is assigned. Also known is the I.P address.
Protocol
On the Internet "protocol" usually refers to a set of
rules that define an exact format for communication between systems.
TCP/IP - (Transmission Control Protocol
/ Internet Protocol)
This is the suite of protocols that defines the Internet. To be
truly on the Internet, your computer must have TCP/IP software.
